From my research I have found the solution and that perfectly worked in SQL management studio. Hence, I thought of sharing my findings with others.=========================================================

Steps to reset the password in SQL Server 2008 R2 Express and fix for the errors:
Step 1. Go to SQL Server Instance -> Properties/Security tab and change the mode to SQL Server authentication mode.
Step 2. Go to Security/Logins, then open 'sa' login properties,
a. Uncheck the "Enforce password policy" and "Enforce password expiration" check boxes there if you decide to use a weak password.
b. Then assign password to 'sa' user
Step 3. In SQL 2008, we may get the following error when we reset the password,
"Cannot set a credential for principal 'sa' . (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 15535)"
Fix: The error can be fixed by selecting the "Map To Credential" check box on the General tab of the Login Properties - 'sa' dialog box.
Step 5. You may get the following error after above step,
“User is not associated with a trusted sql server connection"
Fix: In SQL Server Management Studio, do right-click on the Server name, then select Properties -> Security Under the Server Authentication, then select SQL Server and Windows Authentication Modes.
Step 6. The SQL Server service must be stopped and re-started before this will take effect.
Step 7. Make sure the 'sa' (in the Status tab of sa properties) user name is enabled after restart the service.
